Victoria Beckham

Hi Mr NG, Remember the writing competition u told melody before dse? The one organized by British council about writing a person who inspires u the most in the uk? I won the competition and I am chosen to stay in the University of Stirling in Scotland for a month!!!! It is a summer course at the uni. I wrote about Victoria Beckham. They even called from hk to Sydney and did a phone interview with me!!! The award presentation is on Monday, 16 June Karen

David Beckham is a global phenomenon. He is good looking, a world known football player and also a brand name himself. Everywhere he goes attracts millions of fans: every man wanted to be him and every woman wanted to marry him. But I believe every successful man has a woman behind his back to support him in his hard times. Instead of wanting to dig out more of the footballer’s life after watching one of his documentaries, I have more interest in his wife, Victoria Beckham. 

Victoria Beckham is a mother of four, a fashion designer who was first known as Posh Spice from the famous British girls group, Spice Girls. Then she married David Beckham and started a family together with 3 sons and a daughter. 

To most, Victoria Beckham is the arrogant and unapproachable celebrity who never smiles in photos. I used to share the same impression of Victoria as the majority do, wondering how David Beckham can put up with this woman. However, she is more than she seems to be as I get to know more about her.

When I tried to find out more of Victoria Beckham on the internet and accidentally in the book I was reading at the time, I found that Victoria is a very tough woman who was with a strong determination when she was young. She once said “I want to be as famous as Persil Automatic.” Millions would laugh at her silliness back in the time, but there she is, even more famous than Persil Automatic, which is a household detergent in the UK. This is the first time I was inspired by her determination and perseverance to achieve her goals. 

Victoria Beckham is a fashionista. Talking about her present career as a fashion designer, I am most impressed by her down-to-earth style. From her self-titled fashion label, the designs from Victoria Beckham are simple yet gorgeous. She can modify a simple dress to an elegant night gown by using special cuttings like pleating and folds which make them look fine and fashionable in the signature monochrome. They look unique without trying too hard on patterns and colours. Of course, they are unique also because of the price, too. 

Another thing that I admire of Victoria Beckham is her priority to her family. The kids of the Beckham family are envied by many as they lead a highly privileged life. But they are also well-mannered unlike those spoilt brats with drinking problems and drug addiction just because they have all the money to buy alcohol and coke. You can see that the boys of the Becks always carry their own backpacks and wear casual clothes like ordinary kids do when they arrive at the airport. It has to be about parenting and Victoria deserves all the credits especially in those times when her husband was away playing for the Real Madrid in Spain. 

As an A-list star, Victoria must get a lot of invitations to the parties and opportunities as a member of the Spice Girls. But when she became a mother, Victoria took full responsibility of her children. She dropped her job as a singer and became a full time mother who raised her kids herself instead of leaving them to nannies. Victoria Beckham chose to stay close with her children, spend time with them and be a real mother when she could easily earn more money if she hadn’t given up her career as a Spice Girl. Although she might look miserable in the spotlight, she does smile and have fun with her family. It is quite unbelievable to see her joke with her husband and crawl on the floor to play with her boys in the documentaries when you have only seen her pressing her lips in a tight line. I am inspired by how family orientated she is, when there are fewer and fewer parents who care as much for the upbringing of their children as Victoria Beckham does. 

From the old pictures and interviews, Victoria is funny and good humoured, which is the exact opposite of how she is depicted by the media. Criticisms from people have been trying to shape and discourage us from being ourselves. Even if we tried hard to be perfect, it is still impossible for us to please everybody. But as long as we have our family on our side and with their support, what more can we ever ask for? 

From the look of the Beckhams attending the fashion show of their mother and wife to show their support together, I can see that she has one great family. I am inspired by Victoria Beckham to be grateful of what I have with my family, because they are the most important thing in my life after all.
