A short story with a DSE title

9. Learning English through Short Stories
You are taking a creative writing workshop and you have to submit the following assignment:

Imagine you are a university student living in a student hall. Your roommate has suddenly decided to leave. Write a short story describing the events that led up to your roommate’s sudden departure

“Why are you packing”
“…..”
“Your mother’s sick? Your dad has run away? Nobody ‘s taking care of your little sister at home?”
.....
“Your family’s broke? Your dad’s gone bankrupt? You’ve got no money? I can lend you some!”
“....”
Common! God damn it, say something!!”
“…..”
“I have been so good to you all the time! You know that!”
“Er… Yes!...Good….too good!”
“Then why are you leaving the hall?”
“Goodbye!”
“Bang!”Tina slammed the door leaving me wondering if I have done something to drive her away..

It was not easy to enter the HKU Ho Tung Hall, you have to be either very good at sports or debate or something to get yourself a place. As I was the captain of the women’s tennis team in secondary school and I play rugby well, I was given a place in a double room. The cherry on top was my roommate was this slim, pretty looking and fragile Tina.. Boy, you know I like taking care of people and I was all excited when she first appeared in front of me in September

“Hi!” I held out my strong hand and gave her a firm squeeze. Her hand was so soft and delicate. It was like an expensive piece of soft toy you wouldn’t want to let go once you have it in your hand, so silky, so warm and so good to touch and squeeze. She blushed and quickly withdrew her hand.

“Let me guess what your major is. You have such soft hands you must be doing fine arts.... Music!”

She nodded and blushed again. It made her all the more lovlier. “I’m doing Civil engineering! Want a beer?”

“No thanks, my parents never let me drink.”

“Common, everybody drinks here.” I open a big bottle of Tsing Tao, poured her a glass. “Here, try some. Good stuff!” I emptied the remaining in one gulp and open another bottle for myself..

I gave off a satisfying belch and hoped that she had relished the good taste of my favourite Tsing Tao. But she was like a child being made to swallow some bitter medicine. There was some foam on her upper lip. It was like the whiskers of a kitten. It was so cute, I wiped it off with my fingers, & licked it off with my tongue. I turned on my some music, a slow waltz was playing. I grabbed her into my arms

“Let’s dance!” I put my arms round her waist hoping that she would melt her body into mine but I could sense that she was feeling a bit uneasy as she seemed to be pushing me away..

“You are drunk!”

“I’m not, I like you, I like you a lot…..” and I passed out.

The second day, I bought her a bunch of red roses and a cuddly Teddy Bear that looked like me. I drew two hearts on the card and put it among the red roses and left the bear holding the red roses and laid them by her very fragrant smelling pink pillow. I hope she would scream with joy but I could not see her reaction. She was always in the library or somewhere as I was drinking alone at the dorm waiting for her to come back. When she came back, I was too drunk to hear the door open. When I woke, she was gone, leaving her good smell behind.

Now, she had finally appeared, only to leave me broken hearted. (486)
